Continue up the hill on the A59 onto Brockholes Brow

Hello,

My name is Andrea Ross and I hold the position of the Treasurer on the Preston City Caribbean Carnival Associtation executive committee. I am twenty something years old and live and work in Preston. This is the first time I have been actively involved in the carnival but have enjoyed the event for many years. My time on the committee has been an eye opener, cash flow and making sure every penny from our funders is accounted for is paramount to allow the Carnival to happen, I am currently studying accountancy and I am hoping that the tasks I carry out for the Carnival will help me to develop and enhance my skills and knowledge, at the same time as carrying out an important function. We are working very hard to ensure that Preston City Caribbean Carnival 2008 is a fantastic event and hope you will all enjoy it, I know I will!!

Entry fee is £3.

The Mall – The Main Sponsors for Preston Carnival 2k7

For the second year running ‘The Mall’ will be our silver sponsor for Preston City Caribbean Carnival 2007.

Each of the procession vehicles and the mains stage will be bedecked in the official carnival logos and the silver sponsor – The Mall.

It’s anticipated that most of the 15 or so local bands and other outside bands will make up what is planned to be the largest procession in at least two decades.

The procession is planned to stop outside the Fishergate entrance of ‘The Mall’ at approximately 3.00pm.

When the procession stops it’s hoped the ‘Mall Monster’ will join the procession as it makes its way to the main stage on Moor Park.

“The Mall has been very supportive of the Caribbean Carnival in the past two years. It’s their loyal intentions which will enable us to have yet another bumper event in 2007.”

The Carnival King & Queen Costume - Carnival 2k7

Caribbean Carnival tradition follows that the procession is lead by the band with two of their best-dressed characters ‘The King and Queen’. In order to find this pair there is a contest for the judges to decide the best characters of the registered bands for 2007.

Traditionally the King and Queen costume contest has taken place on the weekend of the Caribbean Carnival itself, however in an attempt to make the event more accessible to the general public the Caribbean Executive committee has agreed with Alex Walker (Museum Officer) to hold the King and Queen costume contest in the Harris Museum.

This year the King and Queen costume contest will take place on Saturday 19^th May 2007 in the Harris Museum. Starting at 1.30pm the best dressed characters of each registered procession band will be paraded in the Museum and hopefully onto the Flag Market were the BBC Blast project will be also running.

It’s anticipated that most of the 15 or so local bands and other outside bands will participate in the contest.

Last year the King and Queen band was called ‘Purple Haze’ and lead by Phil Duncan. The group consisted of many young women and young men from across the city, they were dressed in a purple and gold coloured costume.

As well and many local bands making up the procession, it is hoped the procession will also consist of external bands from Newcastle, Bradford, Barrow, Nottingham, Leeds and London. These bands are guaranteed to make the procession even more colourful, exciting, funky and sexy.

During this extravaganza it is planned the ‘Mall Monster’ will join the festivities on the Flag market.

Also during the morning of Saturday 19^th May 2007, artist Jane Blackburn will be running Carnival mask making workshops till 1.00pm. These workshops are open to any young people who would like to

learn some carnival skills and possibly make some Caribbean Carnival masks for use on Carnival day.

“The costume contest is always a very tense one for the bands, which register to enter the costume contest. The young people in each of the bands have worked very hard for many weeks to create their costumes and this can prove to be the crowning acknowledgement for all their hard work. Either way all the bands will have a wonderful time on the day”

With the Carnival executive receiving the largest number of requests from bands across the city and the country, it is expected we will have the biggest and longest Caribbean Carnival procession in years!

BBC Links with Carnival 2k7

With the BBC having a significant presence in the city during the month of May, they have made direct contact with Ronald Clarke - chairman and Dian Flannagan – treasurer to discuss how they might be able to further support the Caribbean Carnival King and Queen Costume contest on Saturday 19^th May which will take place in the Harris Museum from 12.00noon till 5.00pm.

Throughout the weekend of the 19^th May the BBC will be taking over the flag market with tons of technical equipment which will enable young people to have a hands-on experience of media related work. The BBC hope to be able to offer their services to the Carnival Association by working along side the King and Queen Costume contest and the technical workshops on offer to young people throughout the day.

It’s planned the BBC will provide a stage platform on which the Kings and Queens of each of the procession bands will parade themselves in front of the judges, one of which is planned to come from Trinidad.

The BBC has suggested that they could assist by interviewing the costume pairs as part of the ‘Blast’ activities, which will be also taking place on the Flag Market during the weekend.

Back to the Park ‘For the Party’ - Carnival 2k7

For the first time in two years the procession will conclude on Moor Park with a large main music and entertainment stage on the same location as the BBC’s ‘Big Weekend’

The procession will start from Moor Park Avenue at 12.00noon with the mayor cutting the ribbon to officially start the procession of an estimated twenty procession bands, as they dance their way through the streets of Preston, into and through the city centre, passing The Mall – St. Georges shopping centre by 3.00pm and then onwards to Moor Park for the finale.

It’s planned the procession will go along the following route:

Depart Moor Park Avenue (Easterly direction) turning right onto Deepdale Road.

Deepdale Road turn right onto St. George’s Road.

St. Georges Road turn left onto Garstang Road.

Garstang Road turn right onto Moor Lane.

Moor Lane take third right (on the round a bout) onto Corporation

Street.

At traffic signals (junction with Ringway A582) continue up Corporation Street.

At traffic signals (junction with Fishergate) turn left onto Fishergate.

Passing The Mall entrance at approximately 3.00pm?

Continuing into Church Street to the junction of the Ring Way (A582) and Stanley Street.

Crossing over this junction and turning left into Deepdale Road (A6063).

The procession (vehicles) turn left into Moor Park Avenue.

- Procession ends and the party starts.

Some people may wish to remain on the park all day, such as families who might find it difficult to accompany the procession all the way around the city, owing to having very challenging offspring. On the park throughout the day there will enough space and activity to keep

ones little ‘uns well occupied. There will be family entertainment, succulent African Caribbean food, English and tasty morsels from other cultures, arts, crafts and children’s activities to keep one’s little ‘uns occupied throughout the day. Some of our local councillors will also be around throughout the day to ‘press the flesh’ as well as other public service providers with their information for the public and lots more.

The performers on the main stage will include many local young people as well as performers from further afield. The main music will be calypso, and soca, with some reggae thrown in. It’s hoped there may also be a second performance stage, which will cater for other selective tastes like Hip Hop and R’nB.

“After a long walk through the streets of the city many people will welcome the soft feel of grass under foot, on arrival at Moor Park. This will be the first time we have been able to use the grassed area of Moor Park for our main entertainment”.

the workshops will be open for bands to use MONDAY, TUESDAY & WEDNESDAY BUT these

days are for the artists construction of 4 main pieces that will feature in this years event. They will

however be able to assist and offer guidance.

The workshops are in the units on the 3rd floor of Oyston Mill

The chance for each band in the procession to put forward their best male and best female in a bit to lead the procession!!!

Competition will be held on Saturday 19th May from 12:30pm at the Harris Muesum Preston all registered bands/individual performers are welcome to compete!!! the more the merrier!!!!

In order for this event to be a success it is important that all registered bands participate.......take the chance to show off the delights of 27th May a week early!!!

Its that time again!!!! time to drop foot through the streets to the heavy beats of soca and caypso!!!! dazzled by the vibrant colours of carnival bands from near and far!!!! This year the Carnival procession will be going back to its roots and finishing back at Moor Park by public demand!!! (a treat for the prisoners of HMP Preston!) Defending her title will be Joy Newgent of Nottingham who won the procession competition in 2006!!! Also this year we take the opportunity to commemmorate the 200th year that marks the abolition of the slave trade!!!
